Growing Coriander - Slow Bolt

Preparation

Coriander thrives in full sun or part shade, needing at least 3 hours of sunlight daily. For best results:

  • Use well-drained soil enriched with aged compost or manure.
  • Weed thoroughly and loosen the soil before planting.
  • For container growing, choose pots with at least a 10-litre capacity and fill them with high-quality potting mix.

How to Sow Coriander Seeds

Direct Sowing (Recommended):

  • Sow seeds 6mm deep and 20cm apart, with rows spaced 20cm apart.
  • Keep soil evenly moist but not wet.
  • Seeds germinate in 7-10 days at a soil temperature of 18-21°C.
  • Protect seedlings from pests and weather during early growth.

Hudstone Pro Tip: For a more natural look, try the “scatter seed” method. Roughen the soil, scatter seeds evenly, and lightly cover them.

Caring for Your Coriander Plants

  • Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but avoid waterlogging. Water deeply in the early morning or late afternoon. Avoid wetting the leaves to prevent fungal issues.
  • Fertilising: Well-prepared soil is often enough, but for a boost:
  • Thinning: Thin seedlings to 20cm apart once they’re large enough to handle.

Growing Tips:

  • If growing for leaves and roots, pinch off flower stalks as soon as they appear to prolong the plant’s life.
  • If growing for seeds, allow the plant to flower and develop full seed heads.

Harvesting Coriander

Leaves:

  • Ready to harvest in 45 days.
  • Pinch off outer leaves as needed, leaving the inner ones to continue growing.
  • Store short-term in a perforated plastic bag in the fridge.

Roots:

  • Harvest when large enough to use. Gently pull at the base of the plant or use a garden fork to lift it.
  • Store roots short-term in a perforated plastic bag in the fridge.

Seeds:

  • Harvest once the seed heads have dried and turned beige.
  • Store in an airtight container for long-term use.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

  • Bolting: Premature flowering due to heat stress or extreme weather. Water regularly and avoid sowing during very hot or frosty periods.
  • Frost Damage: Protect plants from frost and prune damaged leaves.
  • Slugs and Snails: Remove hiding spots, use traps, or handpick them at night.
