Let's dive into the world of dishwashing powder and ensure you're using it the right way to achieve those perfectly clean dishes every time.
After years of dedication in the eco-friendly cleaning industry, our experiences have led me to appreciate the nuanced benefits of using dishwashing powder, particularly when it's formulated with the environment in mind.
The hallmark of a quality dishwashing powder is its ability to cut through the daily accumulation of food residues, stains, and other culinary remnants with ease.
Hudstone Dishwasher Powder has been engineered to provide superior cleaning power, setting a new standard in the realm of eco-friendly kitchen hygiene.
Rigorous testing has shown that not only does it compete with, but it also surpasses the performance of leading dishwashing powders and tablets available on the market. This effectiveness is achieved without the need for pre-rinsing dishes, saving water and energy in the process.
By incorporating an inbuilt rinse aid, Hudstone ensures that dishes come out sparkling clean from every cycle. The powder's formulation targets food residues and stains, dissolving them efficiently. This means glasses, plates, and cutlery not only look cleaner but are hygienically clean.
Grease poses a stubborn challenge in any kitchen cleanup routine. Traditional solutions often struggle with oily residues, necessitating additional cycles or even manual washing. Hudstone Dishwashing Powder, however, excels in this area.
Its powerful grease-cutting capabilities ensure that oily pots, pans, and dishes emerge from the dishwasher as if they had been meticulously hand-washed. This capability is particularly significant given the powder’s eco-friendly composition.
The ability to tackle grease effectively reduces the need for multiple wash cycles or the use of additional cleaning products, making the dishwashing process more efficient and environmentally friendly.
With Hudstone, customers can enjoy the dual benefits of superior grease removal and the peace of mind that comes from using a product that is kind to the planet.
Crafted from the safest eco-friendly ingredients and packaged in a zero-waste compostable bag, Hudstone offers between 80 to 160 washes per value bag, making it not only effective but also economical.
It's clear that when it comes to cleaning power and grease removal, Hudstone Dishwasher Powder stands out as a beacon of eco-friendly innovation in the dishwashing arena.
Delving into the world of dishwashing, it's crucial to understand that not all dishwashing powders are created equal. Throughout our three decades in the eco-friendly cleaning industry, we've seen a wealth of options come and go, each promising to be the solution to your dish-cleaning needs.
But when it comes down to it, they generally fall into two main categories: regular dishwashing powder and eco-friendly dishwashing powder.
Regular dishwashing powders are what most people are familiar with. They're widely available and often promise powerful cleaning capabilities. These powders are designed to tackle tough grease and food residues, leaving dishes sparkling clean.
However, the downside to many of these powerful cleaners is their chemical composition. Some contain phosphates and other harsh chemicals that aren't ideal for our water systems or our health.
That's why, although they might offer quick results, we always tread carefully with these options, weighing their cleaning prowess against their environmental impact.
On the other side of the spectrum, eco-friendly dishwashing powders like our Hudstone Dishwashing Powder are formulated with the planet in mind. When we set out to create it, our goal was to blend eco-friendliness with unmatched cleaning power.
The result is a dishwashing powder that not only competes with but surpasses many leading brands on the market, all while maintaining a commitment to environmental sustainability.
Hudstone Dishwashing Powder stands out because it requires no pre-rinsing of dishes, saving significant amounts of water. Plus, it includes an inbuilt rinse aid, ensuring dishes come out sparkling clean without the additional steps often required by other powders.
And with 80 to 160 washes per value bag, it's not just effective but also economical. Made using the safest, eco-friendly ingredients possible and packaged in a zero-waste compostable bag, it's clear why eco-conscious consumers are making the switch.

If you're looking for a powerful clean but also want to reduce your environmental impact, eco-friendly powders are the way to go. They're not just about keeping dishes clean; they're about contributing to a healthier planet.
In our 30 years of experience in the eco-friendly cleaning industry, we've learned a thing or two about getting the best out of dishwashing products.
With the launch of Hudstone's Dishwashing Powder, I'm excited to share the right ways to use this powerful yet eco-conscious solution for sparkling dishes.
When it comes to using Dishwashing Powder, there are some key practices to follow for optimal performance and efficiency:
Do measure the correct amount of powder based on your dishwasher's guidelines and the level of soil on your dishes. Hudstone Dishwasher Powder is highly efficient, requiring only a small amount to work its magic.
Do ensure the powder compartment of your dishwasher is dry before adding the powder to avoid clumping.
Don't overload your dishwasher. It might be tempting to save water and energy by cramming as much as possible into one load, but this often leads to dishes not being cleaned properly.
Don't mix dishwashing powders with other cleaning agents in the dishwasher. Our formula has an inbuilt rinse aid, eliminating the need for additional products and ensuring no harmful chemical reactions occur.
Achieving flawless results with Hudstone Dishwashing Powder is easy if you keep these tips in mind:
Load smart: Place items with the most soiling in the center and face them toward the spraying arms for direct water contact.
Hard water solutions: If you're in an area with hard water, you might need to slightly increase the amount of powder to counter the effects. Our eco-friendly formula is designed to work well even in harsh water conditions.
No pre-rinsing required: Save water and time with Hudstone's powders. Our tests have shown that our powder performs exceptionally well without pre-rinsing, thanks to its powerful formula.
Maintenance is key: Regularly clean your dishwasher’s filter and check for any leftover food particles to prevent odors and maintain efficiency.
With each use of Hudstone's Dishwashing Powder, not only are you ensuring a thorough clean for your dishes, but you're also contributing to a healthier planet.
Remember, a little goes a long way. This high-efficiency formula guarantees you between 80 to 160 washes per value bag, all while packaged in zero waste compostable bags. Embrace the eco-friendly choice without compromising on performance.
Mastering the use of Hudstone's Dishwashing Powder isn't just about sparkling dishes; it's about embracing a more sustainable lifestyle. I've shared the essentials on how to leverage this eco-friendly powerhouse for your home.
Remember, it's not just about the quantity but the approach—keeping your powder compartment dry and your dishwasher well-maintained are key. With up to 160 washes per bag, Hudstone not only promises a thorough clean but also champions environmental responsibility.
So here's to making a small change in our daily routine that leads to a significant impact on our planet. Let's dish out cleanliness the right way.
The correct amount of Hudstone's Dishwashing Powder depends on the size of the load and water hardness. Generally, use 1 to 2 tablespoons. Adjust accordingly for optimal results.
Yes, the powder compartment should be dry before adding Hudstone's Dishwashing Powder to prevent clumping and ensure efficient cleaning.
Overloading the dishwasher can hinder cleaning effectiveness. It's recommended to load dishes strategically without overloading for the best cleaning results.
No, mixing Hudstone's Dishwashing Powder with other cleaning agents is not recommended as it can reduce effectiveness and possibly harm your dishwasher.
For best results, ensure dishes are loaded strategically, consider water hardness adjustments, skip pre-rinsing, and regularly maintain your dishwasher. Follow the dos and don'ts as outlined.
One value bag of Hudstone's Dishwashing Powder can offer between 80 to 160 washes, depending on the amount used per wash.
Yes, Hudstone's Dishwashing Powder is eco-friendly, featuring a zero-waste compostable packaging and a formula that promotes a thorough clean while contributing to a healthier planet.

Here’s our proven 2-step guide for removing blood stains as quickly and as easily as possible:
Soak your sheets in cold water and some Hudstone Pre Soaker for 30 mins. This will oxidise the stain and break it down.
Wash as normal with Hudstone Laundry Powder, or give it an extra soak if required.
Watch here: This was a week-old blood stain that only took 30 minutes to remove using this technique. 🩸🧼
It’s important to use cold water when treating blood stains as hot water can actually set the stain into the fabric, making it even harder to remove.
Hudstone’s range of laundry products are specifically formulated to tackle tough stains like blood, while still being gentle enough on your sheets.
Our Pre Soaker is enzyme-based, meaning it breaks down the proteins in the blood that cause staining. It's also safe for all fabrics and colours so you don't have to worry about damaging your sheets while trying to remove the stains.
Additionally, our Washing Powder contains active oxygen which helps to further break down and lift blood stains (and more) from the fabric. We use non-toxic formulas so you don't have to worry about harsh chemicals being left behind on your sheets.
Remember, prevention is always better than cure.
If you know you're prone to bleeding or have children who tend to accidentally get blood on their sheets, consider keeping a Hudstone Pre Soaker on hand to quickly and easily treat any stains before they become too difficult to remove.
Don't let blood stains ruin your beautiful sheets. With the right products and advice from Hudstone, you can keep your sheets clean and stain-free.
Try out our 2-step method next time you're faced with a pesky blood stain and see the results for yourself!

Well, worry no more! Hudstone are here to turn your laundry woes into laundry wows! 😊
Today, I'm going to guide you on how to make your laundry smell divine. From using the best detergent powders and fabric softeners to maintaining that just-washed fragrance, I'll cover it all!
We'll explore both natural and chemical methods (you know I love the eco-friendly options!) to refresh your clothing, helping you find what works best for you.
So, are you ready to transform your laundry routine? Let's dive in!
Fabric softeners can play a significant role in giving your laundry its smell, providing an extra layer of fragrance that complements your detergent and lasts long after your clothes have dried.
We have two characters in this journey: liquid softeners and dryer sheets. The former does its work during the wash, and the latter gives your clothes a scent boost during the drying process.
Liquid Softeners: These infuse clothes with their fragrance during the wash. Remember to add them at the correct time in the wash cycle – your washing machine should have a dedicated dispenser for this.
Dryer Sheets: Though they may not be as potent as their liquid counterparts, they can add a refreshing scent during the drying phase. Toss in a couple with your wet laundry before you start the dryer.
With options ranging from fresh linen to exotic florals, fabric softeners offer a scent for every nose. However, ensure that your fabric softener’s fragrance works in harmony with your laundry detergent’s scent.
For those with sensitive skin or allergies, opt for fabric softeners free from dyes and perfumes. These gentle warriors soften your clothes and reduce static without the adverse effects.
Remember, the heavenly scent of fabric softeners can sometimes be deceptive. They may contain chemicals and artificial ingredients that can cause skin irritation.
Our advice? Go natural whenever possible!
Embrace your inner chemist and create your own fabric softener using everyday ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, and essential oils. This way, you control what goes into your laundry.
Read on for some nifty ideas.
Vinegar might be the last thing you associate with fresh laundry, but this kitchen staple is surprisingly effective. It's well-known for its cleaning prowess and ability to kick odours to the curb.
Vinegar is a natural odour eater. It can banish a range of scents, from body odour to mildew. Add a cup of white distilled vinegar to your washing machine during the wash cycle.
Believe it or not, vinegar is a natural fabric softener. By breaking down detergent and softener residue, it leaves fabrics softer and better able to retain pleasing scents.
Your washing machine can benefit from a vinegar cleanse too. Run an empty cycle with hot water and two cups of vinegar to banish soap scum, mildew, and any lurking odours.
Vinegar can prevent colours from fading, contributing to a cleaner, fresher look (and smell) for your clothes.
Give your laundry a boost by adding a few drops of your favourite essential oil to the vinegar. Consider lavender, eucalyptus, or lemon for a refreshing kick.
Though vinegar is incredibly helpful, it's not safe for all materials. Avoid using it on delicate fabrics like silk, or on clothes with metal parts, as it can cause damage.
Important: Mixing vinegar with bleach can create harmful fumes, so steer clear of this combo.
Baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, is a versatile, affordable, and non-toxic ingredient that can play a significant role in your laundry routine. Not only can it enhance the smell of your clothes, but it also has a few other surprise benefits.
Let's dive in to understand more about the role of baking soda in making laundry smell nice.
Imagine if you could zap those pesky odours away instead of just covering them up with fragrances. Well, baking soda does just that! It neutralises odours by adjusting the pH balance in your laundry, effectively taming both acidic and basic smells. Isn't that amazing?
Did you know? Baking soda can supercharge your detergent's performance! It softens water, enabling the detergent to delve deeper into fabrics and eliminate grime, dirt, and odour-causing bacteria. The outcome? Fresh-smelling, cleaner clothes. Win-win!
Adding baking soda to your laundry is easy-peasy. For an average laundry load, all you need is half a cup of baking soda. Add it directly to the washing machine drum or the detergent drawer. Follow it with your clothes and your usual detergent, then wash as you normally do.
Stinky gym clothes giving you a tough time? No worries! Pre-soak them in a baking soda solution before washing. Fill a bucket or your washing machine with warm water, stir in a cup of baking soda, and let your clothes enjoy this cleansing bath for a few hours or overnight. Then, wash as usual. The difference will astound you!
Here's a fun fact: Baking soda can also freshen up your washing machine! Over time, washing machines can become stinky due to detergent residues, fabric softener, or even mould and mildew. A hot water cycle with a cup or two of baking soda can help knock out these unwanted smells, promising fresher-smelling clothes every time.
Baking soda is an excellent and wallet-friendly choice to freshen up your laundry. Be it everyday odours or more stubborn smells, baking soda has got your back. Just store it properly in a cool, dry place, away from acids to maintain its magic.
Absolutely, yes!
Essential oils are nature's own perfumes and an amazing way to add a lovely aroma to your laundry. Their potent, lasting fragrances can make your clothes smell divine, without using artificial chemicals.
Remember, quality matters! Choose Hudstone's Australian made essential oils for the best outcome. Lavender, Lemon Myrtle, Mandarin and Eucalyptus are popular choices, each lending its unique fragrance and benefits.
Using essential oils in your laundry is as simple as adding a few drops to your regular laundry detergent. Depending on your load size and how strong you'd like your clothes to smell, 10-20 drops should be enough for an average load.
Want to try something fun? Make a natural fabric softener using essential oils and white vinegar. Just mix one cup of vinegar with 25 drops of your chosen essential oil, and add it to your washing machine during the rinse cycle.
Using essential oils with wool dryer balls during the drying cycle is another clever trick. Dab a few drops of your preferred oil on each ball and toss them in with your clothes. The heat from the dryer helps spread the delightful aroma throughout your clothes.
If you enjoy a sudden burst of fragrance, try making a linen spray with essential oils. Combine distilled water, white vinegar or witch hazel, and 20-30 drops of essential oil in a spray bottle. You can use it to refresh your clothes, linens, or even upholstery whenever you want!
Though natural, essential oils are potent and need to be handled with care. They should be diluted before use to prevent fabric staining. They can also irritate skin, so be cautious, especially if anyone in your home has sensitive skin or allergies.
Used right, essential oils can elevate your laundry routine with their myriad fragrances and the joy of creating your unique scent combinations. The result? Clothes that smell like a dream and a laundry routine that feels like therapy.
Drying is as crucial as washing in the laundry process. The method you pick to dry your clothes can greatly influence the final scent of your laundry.
Air drying, or line drying, is a classic, green choice. While it doesn't add a fragrance per se, it can make your clothes smell fresh, especially if dried outdoors. The "sun-dried" smell is a natural favourite for many.
Pro Tip: Ensure the outdoor environment is clean and free from pollutants and allergens that can stick to your clothes and affect their smell.
Tumble drying is quick and efficient. It works well in all weather conditions and adds a unique warmth to your clothes. For that extra fragrance boost, use dryer sheets or dryer balls infused with essential oils. The dryer's heat helps distribute the scent evenly.
Heads up: Over-drying can give your clothes a slightly burnt or overly heated smell, so make sure to set the correct drying time and heat setting.
Regardless of the drying method you choose, dryer sheets or wool dryer balls dotted with your favourite essential oil can enhance your laundry's fragrance.
Dryer balls can also help fluff up your clothes and reduce drying time.
Now, here's something for those of us who love that extra touch of freshness.
Some of us enjoy spritzing our clothes with fragrance even after they're dry. You can do this using a refreshing fabric spray or by storing scented sachets in your drawers or closet.
This is an absolute gem if you're unable to use fragranced washing products or if you fancy switching up the scent of your clothes between washes.
Let's talk about fabrics, darlings. Different fabrics have their own unique way of holding onto scents. For instance, natural fibres like cotton or wool are fantastic at retaining the fresh scent of detergent and fabric softeners, more so than synthetic fibres.
This little detail could influence your choice of drying method and additional fragrance boosters. Isn't it amazing how each fabric has its own personality?
Here's a quick rundown: The method you choose for drying your clothes doesn't inherently scent them, except when you use those scented drying aids. However, it plays a crucial role in maintaining and enhancing the scents added during the washing process.
So, my loves, choose your drying method wisely to infuse your laundry with that delightful aroma.
From adding a few drops of essential oils directly into your detergent, creating a homemade fabric softener with vinegar, to using dryer balls or a sweet-smelling linen spray - there's a whole world of ways for you to reap the benefits of essential oils while keeping your clothes smelling fresh as a daisy.
Don't forget, different fabrics will hold onto scents in their own unique ways, so consider this before deciding on the best drying method for your needs.
Armed with all these tips and tricks, you're now all set to transform your laundry experience. Get ready for your clothes to smell absolutely heavenly!

Can I also mention this was the second spill for the day thanks to some apple & blackcurrant juice AND it was also a brand new sports polo!
It wasn’t until I began working at Hudstone that I learned how to ‘work at stains’ properly to remove them from clothing.
We can’t just chuck them in the machine and expect miracles… (🙋🏻♀️ guilty).
Here’s exactly what I did to clean the white school uniform polo shirt:
🧴Sprayed the Milo and juice stains with our All Purpose and let sit for half an hour.
🪣 Sprinkled a bit of Hudstone Pre Soaker on the stains and filled a small bucket with some water and 1/2 a scoop of Pre Soaker and let soak overnight.
🫱🏼 In the morning, while the products were still on the polo, I gently rubbed the stains using the hem of the shirt and they started to fade dramatically.
🫧 Washed it with my usual load of clothes using 1/2 a scoop of Regular Powder.
Here's the final result:

Hudstone All Purpose
Drop us a 🙌🏼 if you’re going to try this method on your next school uniform snack disaster!

As a new parent, one of the many decisions you'll have to make is what to wash your baby's clothes in. With so many options available, it can be overwhelming to choose the right detergent or fabric softener. The good news is that washing your baby's clothes doesn't have to be complicated.
When it comes to washing baby clothes, there are a few key factors to consider.
First and foremost, you'll want to choose a laundry powder that is gentle on your baby's delicate skin. Look for detergents or powders that are free from harsh chemicals, fragrances, and dyes like Hudstone. These can cause irritation and rashes, especially if your baby has sensitive skin. You may also want to opt for a powder that is specifically formulated for sensitive skin, as these are often milder and more gentle.
Another important factor to consider is the type of fabric your baby's clothes are made from. Some fabrics, such as cotton and polyester, are easy to care for and can be washed in standard detergent. However, if your baby's clothes are made from more delicate fabrics like wool or silk, you'll need to take extra care when washing them.
In these cases, it's best to use a gentle, naturally derived powder and to avoid using fabric softener, as this can damage the fibers. Ultimately, the key is to choose a washing routine that is gentle, effective, and safe for your baby's skin.
When it comes to washing your little one's clothes, choosing the right detergent is crucial. Here are a few reasons why:
Baby's sensitive skin: Babies have delicate and sensitive skin that can easily get irritated. Normal detergents contain harsh chemicals that can cause rashes, itching, and allergic reactions.
Residue buildup: Due to their small size, baby clothes have a smaller amount of fabric compared to adult clothing. This means that detergent residue can build up quickly, leading to skin irritation and a funky odor.
Stain removal: Baby clothes are exposed to all sorts of messes, from spit-up to diaper blowouts. Choosing a detergent specifically formulated to remove these stains will ensure that your baby's clothes stay fresh and clean.
That's why it's important to choose a product that is gentle, free from harsh chemicals, and able to remove stubborn stains. Look for detergents labeled as "baby-friendly" or "hypoallergenic."
Always read the label and avoid using fabric softeners or dryer sheets, as these can also irritate your baby's skin. Ultimately, choosing the right washing powder for your baby's clothes will help keep them clean, comfortable, and free from irritating chemicals.
Choosing the right washing powder for your baby's clothes is important as their skin is delicate and sensitive. Here are some types of detergents suitable for baby clothes:
Baby detergents are specifically designed for washing baby clothes and are free from harsh chemicals such as fragrances, dyes, and sulfates. They are also formulated to be gentle on your baby's skin, making them an excellent choice for washing clothes for newborns and infants.
Free and clear detergents are also a great option for washing baby clothes. These detergents are free from fragrances, dyes, and other harsh chemicals that can irritate your baby's delicate skin. They are also hypoallergenic, making them ideal for babies with sensitive skin.
Mild detergents are also gentle on your baby's skin and are a good choice for washing baby clothes. They are generally free from harsh chemicals and fragrances and are designed to be hypoallergenic.
When washing your baby's clothes, it's also important to avoid using too much, as this can lead to residue build-up that can irritate your baby's skin. Additionally, avoid using fabric softeners and dryer sheets, as these can also contain harsh chemicals that can irritate your baby's skin.
Type of Detergent | Features |
---|---|
Baby Detergent | Specifically designed for washing baby clothes. Free from harsh chemicals such as fragrances, dyes, and sulfates. Gentle on your baby's skin. |
Free and Clear Detergent | Free from fragrances, dyes, and other harsh chemicals that can irritate your baby's delicate skin. Hypoallergenic. |
Mild Detergent | Gentle on your baby's skin. Free from harsh chemicals and fragrances. Hypoallergenic. |
Reading laundry product labels can be overwhelming, but it's essential to ensure that your baby's clothes are clean and safe. Here are a few tips on how to decipher those laundry product labels.
Look for certifications: Labels with certifications can help ensure that the product meets specific safety and environmental standards.
Check for ingredients: Avoid products that contain harsh chemicals such as bleach, phosphates, and fragrances. Instead, look for products that contain natural, plant-based ingredients.
Look for fragrance-free products: Baby's skin is delicate, and fragrances can cause allergic reactions or irritation. Choose fragrance-free products or natural essential oils.
Follow recommended dosages: Using too much detergent can leave residue on your baby's clothes, which can cause skin irritation. Follow the recommended dosage on the label.
Check for pH levels: Detergents with high pH levels can be harsh on your baby's skin. Look for laundry products with a neutral or lower pH level.
By being mindful of laundry product labels, you can keep your baby's clothes clean and safe without exposing them to harmful chemicals or fragrances.
When it comes to washing baby clothes, using naturally derived laundry products can be a great option. Here are some tips for using them effectively:
Use a laundry detergent that is free of fragrances, artificial colours, and synthetic preservatives.
Consider swapping your fabric softener with white vinegar. Not only is vinegar a natural way to soften clothes, but it can also help remove any residue left by the detergent.
Dryer sheets can be replaced by wool dryer balls. These can help reduce static and make clothes softer while being completely natural.
If you are looking for a natural stain remover, try using baking soda or hydrogen peroxide. Simply mix with water and apply directly to the stain before washing.
When washing cloth diapers, avoid using bleach or fabric softeners as they can damage the fabric and reduce absorbency. Instead, use natural detergents and a vinegar rinse.
Using natural laundry products can help reduce the amount of harmful chemicals that come into contact with your baby's skin. Try these tips to make laundry day a little more natural and eco-friendly.
When it comes to washing baby clothes, preventing allergic reactions in their sensitive skin should be a top priority. Here are some tips to help keep your baby's skin healthy and irritation-free:
Use a gentle, fragrance-free detergent: Many detergents contain harsh chemicals and fragrances that can irritate a baby's sensitive skin. Look for a detergent that is specifically formulated for babies or one that is free of dyes and perfumes.
Wash clothes separately: It's a good idea to wash your baby's clothes separately from the rest of the family's laundry. This can help prevent any irritants or allergens from other items of clothing from transferring to the baby's clothes.
Avoid fabric softeners and dryer sheets: Fabric softeners and dryer sheets can leave a residue on clothes that can irritate a baby's sensitive skin. Instead, try using wool dryer balls or a vinegar rinse to soften clothes.
Rinse clothes thoroughly: Make sure to rinse clothes thoroughly to remove any excess detergent or residues that could irritate the baby's skin.
Choose cotton or other natural fibres: Synthetic fabrics can trap heat and moisture, which can be irritating for a baby's skin. Choose clothes made from natural fibres, such as cotton, that are breathable and will help keep your baby dry and comfortable.
By following these tips, you can help prevent allergic reactions and keep your baby's sensitive skin healthy and happy.
If you prefer to hand wash your baby's clothes, it's important to do it the right way. Here are some simple steps to follow:
Use a gentle detergent: Look for a power ir detergent that's specifically designed for baby clothes. These detergents are gentle and free of harsh chemicals that could irritate your little one's skin.
Fill a sink or basin with warm water: Fill a sink or basin with warm water and add the powder or detergent. Swirl the water around until the detergent is fully dissolved.
Soak the clothes: Add the clothes to the water and gently swirl them around. Let them soak for about 10-15 minutes.
Rinse the clothes: Drain the soapy water and refill the sink or basin with clean, warm water. Swirl the clothes around to remove any remaining soap.
Press out the water: Gently press the clothes against the side of the sink or basin to remove excess water.
Hang to dry: Hang the clothes to dry in a well-ventilated area. Avoid direct sunlight, as it could cause colours to fade.
By following these simple steps, you can help ensure that your baby's clothes are clean and free of any harmful chemicals or irritants.
When it comes to washing baby clothes, many parents wonder if they should use fabric softener. Here's what you need to know:
There really isn't a right or wrong answer when it comes to using fabric softener on baby clothes. It ultimately comes down to personal preference and what works best for your baby's skin and clothes. If you do choose to use fabric softener, opt for a natural, fragrance-free option and use it sparingly.
After washing your baby's clothes, it's important to follow proper drying techniques to keep them looking great and feeling soft. Here are some best practices for drying baby clothes:
By following these best practices, you can ensure that your baby's clothes stay looking great and feeling soft after every wash.
Ironing baby clothes can sometimes be tricky, but it is an essential task that can keep your baby's clothes looking neat and tidy. Here are some tips on how to iron baby clothes safely:
Use a low heat setting: Always use a low heat setting when ironing baby clothes. Babies have delicate skin, and high temperatures can damage their clothes or even harm them.
Iron inside-out: Turn the clothes inside-out before ironing to avoid damaging any prints or delicate fabrics.
Use a pressing cloth: A pressing cloth will help to protect delicate fabrics from the heat and prevent the iron from leaving marks or stains on the clothes.
Avoid using starch: Starch may irritate your baby's skin, so it is best to avoid using it when ironing their clothes.
Take care with buttons and snaps: Be careful when ironing around buttons and snaps, as they can melt or become damaged.
Store safely: Once you have finished ironing, make sure to keep the clothes in a safe place, away from anything that could cause them to catch fire.
Remember to always follow the care instructions on your baby's clothes and use common sense when ironing. By taking care when ironing, you can keep your baby's clothes looking great while keeping them safe and comfortable.
Washing baby clothes requires special attention to ensure that they remain soft, clean, and free of any harmful chemicals. Here are some key takeaways from this article:
By following these simple guidelines, you can ensure that your baby's clothes remain clean, safe, and comfortable to wear. Don't forget to double-check the clothing label and read the detergent instructions before washing to prevent any mishaps. Always prioritise your baby's health and well-being when you wash their clothes, and they'll stay happy and healthy!
]]>If you're a fan of Hudstone laundry powder, you know that proper storage is key to keeping your detergent fresh and effective.
Leaving it exposed to moisture and air can lead to clumping and a loss of potency. But with so many storage options out there, how do you know which one is best?
First and foremost, it's most important to choose an airtight container.
Whether you prefer jars, tins, or tubs, they are all great. Just make sure that the lid forms a tight seal to prevent any moisture from creeping in. This is especially important if you live in a humid climate or store your detergent in a damp area like a basement or laundry room.
At Hudstone, we recommend storing our laundry powders in an airtight container as soon as you receive them. Our refill bags are fully compostable and have a shelf life of six months, but only in dry conditions. By transferring the powder to an airtight container, you can help ensure its longevity and effectiveness.
If you're looking for a stylish and functional storage option, consider repurposing a glass jar or metal tin with a tight-fitting lid. These can be a great way to upcycle packaging and keep your laundry area organised at the same time. Just be sure to thoroughly clean and dry the container before filling it with your powder.
No matter what container you choose, the key is to prioritise airtightness to keep your laundry powder fresh and effective for as long as possible. So go ahead and stock up on your favourite laundry powder, but be sure to store it properly for optimal performance!

However, sometimes, those fancy expensive dishwasher tablets may not be dissolving completely during the wash, leaving your dishes with residue, and making you wonder why you spent money on tablets that didn't work. It's one of the most common dishwasher questions.
Let's explore the reasons why dishwasher tablets may not dissolve, AND how you should be able to fix this issue.
There could be several different reasons why dishwasher tablets may not dissolve properly, but these are the four most common causes why.
Loading the dishwasher incorrectly may cause the tablet to not dissolve properly. Placing dishes too close together or not leaving enough space for water circulation may prevent the tablet from dissolving and distributing evenly.
Dishwasher tablets rely on nice hot water to dissolve properly. If the water temperature is too low, the tablet may not dissolve entirely, thus not working correctly and leaving residue on your dishes.
Sometimes, your dispenser may not open correctly during the wash cycle, causing the tablet not to be released into the dishwasher. This issue can sometimes occur due to a faulty dispenser, a malfunctioning latch, or some kind of obstruction in the dispenser.
Hard water is high in minerals such as calcium and magnesium, which can interfere with the effectiveness of dishwasher tablets. The minerals may bind with the tablet, preventing it from dissolving entirely.
If you are experiencing issues with your dishwasher tablet not dissolving, here are some steps you can take to fix the problem:
If the dispenser is obstructed, remove any debris or residue that may be preventing it from opening correctly. If the dispenser is faulty, consider replacing it or seeking professional assistance.
Ensure that your dishwasher is heating the water to the recommended temperature, which is usually between 120-150 degrees Fahrenheit. If the water temperature is too low, adjust the settings on your dishwasher or consult a professional.
If you're still having issues with your dishwasher tablets not dissolving properly, it might be time to switch up your methods.
Hudstone's top rated Dishwashing Powder is specially designed to dissolve quickly in hot water, leaving your dishes spotlessly clean and residue-free!

]]>One of the biggest reasons to actually wash clothes inside out is that it helps protect any prints, embroidery, or embellishments. By turning your clothes inside out, you're making sure that these finer details don't rub against the inside of the washing machine or other garments. This means they won't fade as quickly or get damaged as easily.
Another advantage of washing clothes this way is that it helps keep your bright colours looking vibrant. Whenever clothes are washed in a machine, they rub up against the washing machine drum and other clothes, causing bright colours to eventually fade. But if clothes have been turned inside out, it can reduce the amount of friction during the wash and preserve those bright colours longer.
Sounds great then! But hang on, could there be any downsides to washing clothes inside out?
For one, it could reduce the overall cleaning effectiveness during your washing cycle. Stains or dirt on the outer side of your clothes won't get as much exposure to the detergent and water as it would if you didn't turn the clothes inside out. Stains or dirt may not get as effectively removed, so you probably still need to treat these separately with a quality pre-soaker beforehand.
Another issue is that turning clothes inside out can cause them to wrinkle more easily during the wash cycle. And if your clothes are made of delicate fabrics, turning them inside out can increase wear and tear, especially around hems and necklines.
So, should you wash your clothes inside out?
It really depends on what kind of clothes you're washing and your own preferences. If you have clothes with delicate prints or bright colours, washing them inside out can be a great idea.
But if your clothes are heavily soiled and need longer cycle, it might be better to leave them right side out.
In the end, the most important thing is to double check and follow the care instructions on your clothes' labels and use your best judgment when deciding how to wash them.
]]>If you're anything like us, you have questions about how to get the most out of your dishwasher.
To celebrate the release of (what we say is) Australia's best eco dishwashing powder from Hudstone, we’ve rounded up 7 common dishwasher questions and their answers:
Your average dishwasher can use around 6-15 litres of water per cycle, this is depending on the type and make of your machine.
Generally, newer energy star-rated model dishwashers will use much use less water than older models.
The average dishwashing cycle lasts around one to two hours, depending on the type of machine you have and the settings.
If you’re in a hurry, most modern dishwashers come with a ‘quick wash’ setting which will shorten the time considerably.
The type of washing detergent you use in your dishwasher depends on personal preference.
Powder detergents generally have a longer shelf life and can be more cost-effective, while tablets are more convenient to store and use.
If you use your dishwasher regularly, you should probably clean your dishwasher at least monthly.
Start by removing any large pieces of debris stuck in the filter, then run a cycle with a detergent and an empty machine.
Afterwards, use a damp cloth to wipe away any leftover residue on the inside of the dishwasher and run a rinse cycle.
If you need to drain your dishwasher, first make sure that the power source is off and unplugged.
Remove any dishes or items in the washer, then locate the drain hose connected to it. Unscrewing this will allow water to begin draining out of the bottom of the machine.
You should always try to load plates and cutlery in a way that allows the water to move as freely as possible.
Avoid overcrowding your machine and stacking items on top of one another. It's better to separate loads than try to wash everything at once.
Also make sure that all your dishes are facing down so the water can reach them effectively. There should be some space left between each plate and bowl so they can be properly cleaned.
The upper and lower racks in your dishwasher can normally last up to 10 years before needing replacement.
Signs that you may need a replacement could include some rusting or cracking of the plastic and metal components.
Using dishwasher powder detergent in your dishwasher is super easy.
Just add the powder directly to your dishwasher's detergent dispenser. One scoop is usually all you need.
If the powder in your dishwasher or your dishwasher tablet is not dissolving, there could be a few possible reasons.
You should check that your dishwasher is set to the right temperature and that your water pressure is adequate.
Also make sure that you're using a high-quality dishwasher powder like Hudstone for optimal performance. You won't have that issue with us.
If you don't have dishwasher powder, we'd recommend hand washing your dishes in the mean time and putting in an order for Hudstone Dishwashing Powder. It's Australia's best quality and value.

Washing reusable baby wipes can be a bit of a hassle. So we've put together this handy guide on how to do it properly.
Here you will find a quick guide on how to wash reusable baby wipes and the most common questions about washing reusable baby wipes.
I know, I know. You're probably wondering why you should even bother using reusable baby wipes when disposable ones are so much easier and readily available. But hear me out!
Reusable baby wipes have a lot of benefits that disposable ones just don't have. For starters, they're better for the environment. Every time you use a disposable wipe, it can take up to 500 years for it to decompose in a landfill. That's a lot of waste!
There are many other benefits to using reusable baby wipes, including:
With all these benefits, it's no wonder that more and more parents are making the switch to reusable baby wipes!
Step 1: Start by filling up your sink with warm water. Warm water helps to loosen up any dirt or debris that may be on the wipes.
Step 2: Add a small amount of washing soap, powder or detergent. Some parents choose to soak their wipes for a time before washing them. This can help to disinfect the wipes and remove any lingering smells.
Important note: Make sure to choose your soap or detergent carefully (below you will find some tips for that).
Step 3: Swirl them around in the water to help loosen any dirt or debris.
Step 4: Rinse off under running water until all the soap is gone.
Step 5: Hang them out to dry.
And voilà! In 5 simple steps you'll have clean baby wipes ready to use.
The best detergent to use when washing your reusable baby wipes is a mild, unscented laundry powder for babies. You'll want to avoid using anything with harsh chemicals, fragrances, or other irritants.
Check out our premium laundry powders suitable for babies at Hudstone Home. It is great for babies skin, cruelty free, eco friendly and super inexpensive.
You'll want to avoid using anything with harsh chemicals, fragrances, or other irritants, and make sure it is non-toxic and bio-degradable.
Note: Don't miss our post on The best washing powder for Baby Clothes.
Yes, you can use reusable baby wipes on your newborn. In fact, they are often a better option than disposable wipes since they are free of harsh chemicals and fragrances. Just be sure to choose a mild soap or the right detergent to wash them with (as mentioned above).
You can start using reusable baby wipes as soon as your baby is born. However, some parents choose to wait until their baby is a bit older before making the switch. There is no right or wrong answer – it ultimately comes down to your personal preference.
Reusable cloth wipes are just like disposable wipes, except you can use them over and over again. To use them, simply wet the wipe with water and use it to clean your baby's bottom. When you're done, simply toss the wipe in the wet bag until laundry day. At laundry time, simply wash your wipes with your other cloth nappies. That's it! Now you know how to use reusable cloth wipes.
No, you don't have to wash them right after every use. However, it is a good idea to wash them every few days or so to keep them clean and fresh. You can either wash them by hand or in the washing machine. Just be sure to use a mild detergent and air dry them to prevent any shrinkage, as mentioned above.
Reusable wipes need to be kept fresh if you want them to be effective. Otherwise, they just end up stinking up the place. Here's a few tricks that seem to work for most people:
By following these simple tips, you'll be sure to have fresh, clean reusable baby wipes every time you need them.
Newborns need a lot more wipes than older babies. When the baby is age one or older, usually 40 wipes is more than enough.
These are just guidelines, of course. Every family is different and you'll quickly figure out how many wipes you need based on your baby's needs and how often you do laundry.
Pro tip: If you're using reusable baby wipes, it's a good idea to have at least two sets so you can always have clean ones on hand. This is especially important in the early days when you'll be changing baby's diaper more often.
Reusable baby wipes are usually made from cotton, bamboo, or another soft fabric. This makes them gentle on your baby's skin and easy to wash.
You can find reusable baby wipes online or at many stores that sell baby products. There are many great brands of reusable baby wipes on the market.
Once you have your baby wipes, it's time to prep them for use in these simple 2 steps:
Step 1: Start by washing them in a gentle cycle with warm water and mild detergent.
Step 2: Then, rinse them well and allow them to air dry.
Now that your wipes are clean and ready to use, you'll need to wet them before each use. The best way to do this is to store them in a wet bag or container with water. This will keep them moist and ready to use at a moment's notice.
Reusable baby wipes are a great way to reduce waste and save money. They are also gentle on your baby's skin. In this article, we've provided information on how to use and care for reusable baby wipes. We've also included a handy guide on how many you'll need based on your baby's age.

]]>Here is a quick and easy guide on how to wash a Smiggle backpack.
What you will need:
1. Begin by mixing together your laundry detergent or powder into a bowl.
2. Next, use the toothbrush to scrub away any dirt or stains from the backpack. Focus on any areas that seem particularly dirty.
3. Once you have scrubbed the backpack, dunk it into the bowl of soapy water and let it soak for a few minutes (or longer if particularly stained).
4. After it has soaked, use a soft cloth to wipe away any remaining soap or dirt from the backpack and rinse the backpack off with warm water
5. Finally, let the backpack air dry. Make sure to allow enough time before the backpack needs to be used again.
And that's it! Your Smiggle backpack is now as clean as new and ready to be enjoyed again.
Note: For the grown ups you may also wish to read our guide on How to wash a Patagonia Backpack
A Smiggle backpack is a backpack made by the Australian stationary company, Smiggle. The backpacks are known for their colorful designs and patterns for kids.
Yes, you can wash Smiggle bags using a mild laundry detergent and a soft brush. You can follow our instructions above for the specific instructions.
We recommend hand washing Smiggle bags and backpacks (as opposed to using a washing machine) to avoid any damage especially on the more delicate designs.
You should wash your Smiggle backpack at least once a school term. You might find it easier to schedule a good clean during long weekends or the school holidays.
If required, it might be a good idea to spot clean it more often in between washes if the backpack becomes stained.
We hope you found this quick guide on washing your Smiggle backpack helpful. If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact us.
]]>There's only one way to properly wash a Patagonia backpack - and that's by using the gentle cycle with cold water and a light detergent. Otherwise, you might end up damaging the delicate fabric.
Of course, I didn't know this when I first bought my Patagonia backpack. And so, like an idiot, I threw it in the washing machine with my other clothes on a hot cycle. Needless to say, the backpack came out looking like a wrinkled mess.
But luckily for me, I was able to fix it. All it took was some cold water and a little bit of detergent - and voila, my backpack was as good as new!
Here's how you can do the same:
1. Set your washing machine to the gentle cycle with cold water.
2. Add a light detergent - avoid using anything too harsh or abrasive.
3. Wash your backpack alone - don't throw it in with other clothes.
4. Hang your backpack up to dry - avoid putting it in any direct or harsh sunlight.
On their official website, Patagonia specifically mention to check the label inside you bag first, as it will have the most relevant washing information for your backpack.
Here's a direct quote:
"Washing instructions are printed on a white tag inside our garments. Following our garment care instructions will help make sure that your gear has a long, interesting life. In general, washing your gear in cold or warm water with mild laundry soap (non-toxic, biodegradable types preferred) and drying it on the line are the best ways to clean Patagonia® products."
At Hudstone our non-toxic, biodegradable washing powder will do the job perfectly, as per Patagonia's guidelines and recommendations.
If you've got any stains on your backpack, it's always best to pre-treat them before washing. This will help to prevent the stain from setting in and becoming permanent.
There are many different ways to pre-treat stains, but you should avoid harsh chemicals and try to use a product that is more gentle and natural.
One option is to make a paste out of baking soda and water, and then apply it to the stain. Leave it for a few minutes before washing as normal.
Another option is to use Hudstone Home's All Purpose Cleaner. Simply spray it onto the stain, leave it for a few minutes, and then wash as normal.
If you do need to machine wash your backpack, make sure to use the gentle cycle with cold water and a light detergent. Avoid using hot water or putting your backpack in the dryer, as this can damage the fabric.
Once you've placed your backpack in the washing machine, set it to the gentle cycle and use cold water. Then, add a small amount of detergent - we recommend using Hudstone Home Washing and Laundry Powders.
After the cycle has finished, remove your backpack from the machine and let it air dry. Avoid putting it in direct sunlight, as this can cause the fabric to fade.
If you'd rather hand wash your backpack, start by filling a sink or basin with cold water. Then, add a small amount of detergent - again, we recommend using one of our eco friendly and concentrated Laundry Powders.
Gently scrub the backpack in the water with a soft bristle brush to loosen any dirt or grime, then leave it to soak for as long as necessary (longer for heavily soiled items).
Once it's done soaking, rinse the backpack thoroughly with cold water. Gently squeeze out any excess water, then let it air dry - again, avoiding direct sunlight.
Now that you know how to safely and properly wash your Patagonia backpack, it's time to put those tips into action! Follow the steps above and your backpack will be good as new in no time and ready for your next adventure.
P.s for those of you that have kids, also see our guide on How to wash a Smiggle backpack.

To start, you will need a clean pillowcase, water, detergent, pre-soacker (optional). Here is a quick way to quickly wash and dry them and have your pillows looking as good as new before you know it!
The first step is to remove the pillowcase. Check any labels to make sure that if the pillowcase is machine-washable, you can machine-wash it. If the pillowcase is not machine-washable, you can hand-wash it in cold water. If the pillowcase is especially stained, use a quality pre soaker first to give you an advantage.
The next step is to fill up a bathtub with hot water. Be sure to use hot water, as this will help to remove any stains or dirt that may be on the pillow.
Once the bathtub has filled up with water, add your preferred powder or detergent. Be sure to use a product that is safe for your skin and designed for removing stains, like Hudstone Regular Powder or Hudstone Sensitive Powder. You do not need to use too much, as our powders are super concentrated without any fillers or bulkers that most other brands use.
Once the detergent has been added, place the pillows in the bathtub and let them soak for about 30 minutes. This will help to loosen up any dirt or stains that may be on the pillow.
After 30 minutes to an hour, use a tap or a hose to rinse out the pillows. Be sure to get all of the soap detergent off of them, and squeeze out the excess water.
Once they have been rinsed, place the pillows in a sunny spot to dry. They should be dry in a few hours on a good day. If it's colder or cloudy of course it may take longer.
There you have it! A quick and easy way to wash your couch pillows. Be sure to follow these steps the next time you need to clean your pillows, and they will look, feel and smell like brand new in no time.

]]>But just like any other piece of fabric furniture, your backrest pillow needs to be cleaned every once in a while to get rid of all the sweat, bacteria and dirt that's built up over time.
Here's our guide on how to properly wash your pillow that anyone can follow.
Follow these simple steps to wash your backrest pillow and get it back to its former glory- feeling fresh and smelling great!
Depending on the brand or material of your backrest pillow, it might need to be hand-washed or machine-washed. If you're not sure or feeling a little nervous about it, check with the manufacturer before you start.
Note: Avoid using bleach or any other harsh chemicals on your backrest pillow as this may damage the fabric or affect its shape and color.
If your backrest pillow is especially dirty or stained, you might need to pre-treat it before washing. Use a pre-soaker or stain remover with a sponge to dab at the stained areas. Let the pillow soak in the suds for about 15 minutes before rinsing it off with cool water.
Fill a sink or bucket with cold water and add your favorite washing powder or detergent. We may be a little biased, but at Hudstone our Australian made pure laundry powder is the best on the market both in terms of value and quality.
Soak the pillow and let it rest for about 15 minutes, then rinse it thoroughly with cold water .
Place the pillow in a mesh laundry bag and wash it on a gentle or delicate cycle with cold water and a mild detergent. It's important to use a gentle or delicate cycle because backrest pillows are often filled with stuffing or foam which can get easily damaged in the wash. Also make sure you use a mesh laundry bag and this will help protect the pillow from getting caught in the washing machine's gears and also keep it from becoming tangled with other items.
After washing, hang the pillow outside to dry or use a low-heat setting on your clothes dryer. We prefer to dry outside as some sun and fresh air will help remove any lingering smells. If you're using a clothes dryer, we recommend using a fabric softener to help keep the pillow smelling great.
So, there you have it! How to wash your backrest pillow in a few simple steps. Your backrest pillow is now ready to be enjoyed for many more months (or years) of comfort. Just make sure to check the care tag before beginning to avoid any damage to your pillow. And if you're still feeling a little unsure, contact Hudstone Home directly and one of our friendly staff members will be more than happy to help.

I have a question from Lisa, who's asking me today "I need tips on grimy, sport shirt collar stains". Yes, it's a hard one, Lisa, but I'm glad you gave it to me because now I can share with everyone else!
I must say though, before you approach anything, if you have used stain removers on collars before, it's normally very hard to get all of the dirt and grime out. But nevertheless here's a trick which I have done over the years.
What I normally do is I will spray the collar with a little bit of water to start with just to loosen the fabric. And then what I do is I spray it with the all purpose spray.
Now out comes a little toothbrush which I've got if it really needs some extra help or I use my little soft brush to remove stains. I then spread and move the Hudstone All Purpose Spray all around the collar.
Then if it's still really, really dirty, I dip the collar in water and into the laundry powder with a bit of pre-soaker. I'll leave it soaking in a strucket for as long as I can.
Clean shirt collars easily with Hudstone All Purpose Spray and Laundry Powders.

]]>Sensitive skin can become irritated from using regular laundry detergent or powder. At Hudstone Home we believe in using ethical, organic and toxic free washing powder for all washing, but especially for baby clothes. We love gentle or sensitive laundry detergent or laundry powder. Gentle options like ours have little to no harsh chemicals, oils or fragrances. This will have the highest chance of protecting your baby’s sensitive skin from irritation.
Here at Hudstone Home, we currently offer two ethical and safe laundry powders that are great for washing your clothes, linen and towels and make great baby washing powders. They also work on tough stains!
Both our regular blend washing powder and sensitive blend washing powder are super concentrates and contain no fragrances, essential oils, additives, bulkers or fillers. Using a pure washing powder without any of these nasties means your baby's sensitive skin will be irritation free.
We recommend our sensitive washing powder for baby clothes just to be extra safe. The best part? It will work on all your other washing too – way more practical than using a specified baby laundry detergent.
Many people use fabric softener but in actual fact, softener is often not needed. You only need fabric softeners if you're using harsh chemicals that stiffen fabrics. Luckily, our washing powder doesn't do this! This saves you time and money!
Another hot tip is to wash your baby’s clothes separately from regular clothing. Throwing everything in one load can lead to irritation from the various particles on your clothes ending up on your baby’s clothes!
Brand new baby clothes are generally soft and smell fantastic and fresh.
Unfortunately, we often don't know what they have been washed in. If your new baby clothes have been washed in bulk before they were sold, they may have been washed in harsh laundry liquids or powders. This type of laundry detergent is often stored in plastic containers. These can be unethical and contain harsh chemicals and toxins that cause irritation.
It is important to wash your baby's clothes before they are worn to make sure any of this old laundry powder or liquid is washed away to protect their sensitive skin. Although there is no set rule of the optimal time to wash your baby’s clothes before they are worn, somewhere between one to two weeks is best. This way the clothes are still clean and fresh, but there hasn't been enough time for any other nasties to get on them.
How you store your clothes is just as important as how you wash them. If they are folded neatly and in a dry, cool place, it will preserve the freshness and prevent sensitive skin from getting irritated.
Older wardrobes can smell old and musky and this can get seep into clothing, towels or linen. This can be combatted by scented draw liners, lavender pouches (lavender repels bugs) or cedar balls. You could also consider storing the baby clothes in an airtight tub to keep them fresh!
You must wash hand knitted baby clothes very carefully because of the delicate make and because they're already tiny. The most effective way to wash hand knitted baby clothes is by hand. This is because the material can easily shrink or even stretch if it's put into a washing machine that tumbles or spins clothes.
Washing by hand will ensure you get the longevity of your hand knitted baby clothes too. When deciding the temperature, always check the label as this can change depending on the type of material used. If there is no label or the clothes were knitted by a lovely family member or friend, a good rule of thumb is to wash with cold water.
If hand washing, simply dissolve your laundry powder in a cup of warm water and then dilute it in your bucket or sink with cold water. Our sensitive washing powder is perfect for this!
If the baby clothes are hand knitted very tightly and are made from artificial material, you could wash them in a machine on a delicate or gentle setting. Make sure you use cold water and pop them in a laundry bag or pillowcase. Again, this will prevent stretching or shrinkage.
It's important to note hand knitted baby clothes can run if they have been made with artificial or polyester fabrics. If you have different coloured baby clothes, it might be best to wash these separately for the first two to three washes.
When drying hand knitted baby clothes, make sure you dry them flat to prevent stretching. Hanging them on a clothesline can cause clothes to change shape and the pegs could leave marks. You can put them in a towel first, roll them up and squeeze all the water out to make this process a bit faster. You can use a drying horse or even use a table covered in a towel.
Knitted baby clothes should not be tumble dried as it can shrink them and change their shape and anything left behind from previous loads could affect sensitive skin.
Woollen baby clothes are fantastic as they are naturally hypoallergenic and anti-bacterial. Wool clothes also don't need to be washed as often, hurrah for less laundry!
Washing woollen baby clothes and hand knitted baby clothes follow much of the same principles. Cold water, hand washing and lying flat to dry! The main difference is wool requires special laundry detergent. A wool wash does not contain the enzymes of usual laundry detergent or powders and won't break down the clothes, so it is important to use a specialised wool wash or laundry detergent.
If your washing machine has a good wool wash setting, you can try washing your woollen baby clothes by machine. Only start with one or two items though. This means if the machine stretches or shrinks them, you won't lose all of your previous clothing!
Wool baby clothes are like knitted baby clothes and should not be tumble dried.
This shouldn't be a problem or cause any harm to your baby's sensitive skin. If there is a chance your baby has super sensitive skin, it could get irritated from regular laundry detergent or powders though. At Hudstone Home we believe the clothes you wear, the sheets you sleep in and the towels you dry yourself with should be washed in safe and ethical products. This is best for the environment and your health!
Washing your baby clothes in safe and ethical washing powders or liquids is also safest for their health and sensitive skin. We recommend using Hudstone Home sensitive washing powder as it is perfect for babies and free from fragrance, essential oils, additives, bulkers and fillers.
If you wash your baby clothes and the rest of your families' clothes in one load using the sensitive washing powder, pop them in a bag! A laundry bag or even a pillowcase is great to use to keep your baby’s tiny socks, onesies and underwear together.
If your baby has thrown up or spilt something and made a stain, use a spray like our All Purpose Laundry Spray. Using a spot spray is a great way to remove a stain instead of soaking all the clothing in a harsh washing powder or laundry detergent.
To preserve the life of your baby clothes and their tiny little clips, buttons and fasteners, make sure they're closed or buttoned before washing! This way they won't get caught on anything, fall off or break.
If you're washing a cloth diaper, give it a soak before washing and after rinsing the poop out. You can do this in cold water overnight with your washing powder or even for a few hours before your usual wash. If your baby does not have sensitive skin, you can use our safe and effective Pre-Soaker.
Use an old toothbrush to scrub stains out! You can even squeeze some lemon on the stain to get it to disperse.
If the baby clothes were extra spoiled you can soak them in hot water for 30 minutes before you wash them to help remove the stains.
As mentioned earlier, store baby clothes in a cool, dry place, in a plastic tub or use scented draw liners, lavender pouches and cedar balls. This will keep them fresh and protect your baby’s sensitive skin.
]]>Any company that uses fragrances in their laundry products isn't required to disclose what’s actually in the fragrances, so they can also be harsh on your clothes and skin.
When you switch to using an ethical and safe, fragrance free laundry powder like ours, these fake and nasty fragrances are not used. Our sensitive washing powders do not contain any fragrances, essential oils, additives, bulkers or fillers. Although our products will make your laundry smell fresh and clean, the scent after washing is not quite as strong as some regular detergents you're used to.
If you’ve used regular supermarket washing powder or laundry detergent for a while, it can be an adjustment getting used to clean laundry without the same strong artificial smell. Do not fear - you can still get beautiful smelling washing and use ethical, safe laundry products! This is where essential oils come in.
Adding some essential oils to your laundry is a fantastic and easy way to make your laundry smell beautiful and fresh. It’s also much better for the longevity of your clothes, linen, blankets and towels.
What about the effects on your skin? If you’re prone to rashes or eczema, essential oils and ethical laundry products are a winning combination. A washing powder without the nasties rubbing on your skin all day, combined with essential oil, can do wonders for skin irritations. Using a few drops of essential oil will not only make your clothes smell good but it could even help clear up any current rashes or itchy spots!
When you’re sleeping in bed and your body is rubbing against the sheets and blankets, you’re often breathing in the fragrance that’s left behind from washing powders or detergent. At Hudstone Home, we want to help people live their healthiest life and we believe it’s better to not be inhaling these toxic fragrances while you sleep - especially if you’re prone to conditions like asthma or if you find yourself sneezing often. If you use a safe and ethical laundry detergent combined with a high quality essential oil, you can still get a fantastic smell without inhaling fake fragrances.
Okay, you’re convinced, but which essential oils are best? We love pure essential oils that are of high quality. If they have other additives, they can cause stains or discolouration to your washing. Our essential oils are made from the highest quality concentrated ingredients, so each scent produces an incredibly clean smell that leaves laundry with a long lasting fresh odour.
This is just one of their amazing qualities. Our oils are also versatile and have many other uses! They can be used to rub on your skin, for a range of cleaning needs and on your temples or under tired eyes.
When using essential oils, always exercise caution. Although these are naturally occurring oils, they are super concentrated and if too much is used, your skin could get irritated. If you have any skin irritations or are prone to rashes, before adding the oils to your washing, test patch a drop of the essential oil on your wrist and leave it for 24 hours. Only proceed and use the oils if there was no skin reaction.
But which type is best, you ask? If you’re using essential oils purely to make your washing smell amazing, much of the choice is a personal preference. We like to change it up depending on what is going in the wash!
Citrus essential oils smell fresh and light and have multiple uses. They double as an awesome stain remover and can help get rid of tough stains like grease. They are also great at removing odours and can be used for general cleaning around the house.
We created two of these nifty oils. Our Lemon Myrtle essential oil can be used in the wash, to spot remove stains and soften fabrics. We also have a Mandarin essential oil that is beautifully citrus scented. It is a bit gentler than our lemon option but will still remove light stains and make your clothes smell lovely and fresh.
Eucalyptus and lavender oils are our favourite options for linen, blankets and towels. The smell of lavender has a calming effect and is a natural disinfectant. For this reason, we love to use it on bedsheets! We created a Lavender Essential Oil that can be added to your washing to make your sheets smell great and give you a restful night’s sleep. It can even help you fall asleep quicker and give you an improved sleep cycle due to its soothing effects.
Eucalyptus has multiple uses and works great for combatting musty smelling sheets or old towels. Our Eucalyptus Essential Oil has antibacterial properties and works well on tough stains. You can use it around the house too – it’s great for rubbing off stickers! If you’re prone to eczema or skin irritations, we would recommend this oil as it can help calm them down.
At the end of the day, it’s completely up to you what fragrances you like best. If you like lemon fresh linen, go for it! If you like lavender smelling jumpers, go for that! That’s the fantastic thing about having unscented laundry detergent or washing powder, you can add essential oils for any occasion depending on how you feel on the day.
For all of these essential oils, only 1-3 drops are needed per load and you’ll be on your way to beautiful smelling laundry!
Yes, you certainly can! This is the easiest and best way to add essential oils to your washing.
If you’re using an unscented washing powder, you need to drop the essential oils into the machine rather than into the powder as it can cause clumping. Once your washing machine has filled up with water, add the drops in so they can dilute. If the essential oils were to drop straight onto your clothes rather than into the water, it could cause a stain if the load has delicate fabrics.
If you’re using an unscented liquid laundry detergent, just add 20-30 drops to your full container and shake the bottle. Then you can simply add your usual amount of detergent to your washing machine and your clothes will come out with a lovely smell! Start with a smaller number of drops in the bottle and do a load of washing to see how strong the scent is. If it’s too weak, you can always add more essential oils later. If you don’t want the oils in the full bottle of detergent, simply add a couple of drops to the lid of the laundry liquid before you pour it into the machine.
Fabric softener is only needed when using harsh chemicals on tough stains but if you’re using a liquid fabric softener, you can also add the essential oils to the softener, following the same methods as adding them to a liquid laundry detergent.
Yes! It is completely safe to add essential oils to your washing machine and it won’t cause any physical damage to the machine. Some people might be wary of adding oils to a machine as oils can be flammable. If you use our Hudstone Home essential oils, they are so concentrated that you only need 1-3 drops per load of washing. That’s a very small amount compared to how many litres of water is used by machines to wash laundry! The essential oils will naturally dilute in all this water so they’re safe to add to any laundry load.
When it comes to drying, it is best to air dry large sheets or towels if you have used essential oils. Although this is incredibly rare, the heat of a dryer and the use of oil without the water dilution can be a fire hazard. If you’re simply drying a bunch of clothes, you can add 1-3 drops of essential oils to a washcloth and put that in with the clothes to get that nice smell.
Did you know essential oils are great for cleaning away smelly washing machine odour too? Front loaders can sometimes get a bit of a funky smell from not being able to dry out properly after washes. Adding 5-10 drops of our lemon myrtle essential oil to a washer and then placing it in the wash barrel overnight with the door open, can make any smells dissipate!
We hope this blog helps you use essential oils and understand their fantastic and useful qualities. If you have any questions about our essential oils, please get in touch.
]]>We all know that having clean bedding is important for our physical health so that we aren't exposed to mites, germs and bacteria. However, there are also mental benefits too.
Fresh bedding can go a long way to reduce restless nights and can help you wake up in the morning feeling more refreshed. Having a calm, relaxing night's sleep makes you feel more energised and ready to bounce out of bed and take on the day without being tired, groggy and irritable.
We all want the best night's sleep possible, and in order to achieve that, we need a nice comfortable, clean bed.
There's a reason that Hotels, Motels, Bed and Breakfasts, Resorts and Airbnb establishments all opt for white bedsheets in their guest rooms - white linen gives the feeling of pure cleanliness.
What could possibly put your mind and body to rest more than beautifully laundered, fresh, clean, white sheets?
We are going to dive into how you can bring that feeling home from your hotel stay - how you can get the cleanest and best white bedsheets of your life.
At Hudstone, we know what it takes to deliver the finest products from the most premium ingredients.
We are a proudly Australian owned and operated business that has been in the industry for almost 40 years.
Needless to say, we know a thing or two about keeping your home sparkling clean, and have picked up plenty of tips and tricks along the way, all while developing our much-loved and trusted range of products.
At Hudstone, our washing powders are safe for sensitive skin conditions, and we have a carefully crafted sensitive blend that is very mild.
We know how to care for you, your family and the environment, and we wanted to share our secret method for the cleanest and best white bedsheets of your life.
Add 1 scoop of Hudstone Regular or Hudstone Sensitive blend into the washing machine along with your bedding.
Each and every single product in our range is non-toxic, biodegradable, safe for you and your family and environmentally friendly. We are also vegan friendly and we have never and will never test on animals.
Both our regular blend laundry powder and our sensitive blend laundry powder are sold in various quantities - suitable for all families and lifestyles.
Our versatile oxygenated Pre Soaker powder has been designed to take care of incredibly stubborn, heavy stains on fabrics.
Much like our entire product range, it is incredibly effective and does the job just right. Along with being fantastic for bed sheets, it also works wonders on items such as shoes and extra dirty work clothes. It can really be relied on to lift those stubborn stains that need a little extra TLC.
You can also add it to your machine as a laundry booster for when you’ve got an extra dirty load of washing and have no time to soak it.
Hot water washing machine cycles have many benefits, including in the following situations:
A hot wash has also been proven to be best used for germ removal if anyone in the household is battling cold or flu symptoms. This can help to stop the spread through the whole family.
Additionally, washing towels, bedding and face washers in hot water helps to keep the spread of allergy-inducing irritants such as dust mites at bay.
While your dryer is a convenient shortcut to getting your sheets back in your bedroom faster, drying your linens outside under the sun will actually whiten them because the sun's UV rays have antibacterial and bleaching effects.
As an added bonus, this method is also much gentler on your linens than a dryer, so it’ll help prolong the life of your sheets, too.
Enjoy a beautiful night's sleep on the whitest and brightest bed sheets you have ever seen. Once you have used this method, you will be well and truly hooked!
At Hudstone, all of our washing powders are safe for sensitive skin conditions, and we even have a carefully crafted sensitive blend that is extra mild.
We are completely transparent with all of our formulas and ingredients, as we have absolutely nothing to hide. Our Hudstone Sensitive Washing Powder (Super Concentrate) contains an alkaline mineral salt, nonionic and anionic surfactant. It has been lovingly created with the most sensitive of skin in mind, such as those with existing skin conditions and even babies.
There’s nothing better than slipping between the freshest, clean and crisp linen sheets after a long hard day. However, over time, the white linen sheets you spend your hard-earned money on may need a little extra TLC to remain looking and feeling their best.
Over the life of your sheets, a build-up of body fluids and oils, fake tan and food (for all those bedtime snackers out there) can make itself at home on your favourite sheets, and if not treated, can begin to turn them yellow.
Here are some other tips for your sheets and bedding:
Storing sheets in plastic boxes or bags can actually turn them yellow. To help them maintain their natural white colour and fight off the yellow tinge, a great storage tip is to line your linen cupboard with acid-free tissue paper.
To enable them to bounce back to their natural colour, Wash stains immediately. Then, sprinkle some baking soda and some vinegar and blot the affected area. Lemon juice in the wash cycle can also assist with tough stains.
Keep your white sheets with other whites and don't wash them with any zips, Velcro or buttons that may inflict damage to them.
For best results, you should clean your bedding every 7-10 days. If you're worried about excess washing wearing out your sheets, invest in some high-quality linen that won't be adversely impacted by extra laundering.
Good quality bedding is not cheap. Mattresses can be ghastly expensive and so too can decent pillows. Mattress and pillow protectors can be a great investment and can be machine washed too.
When you're washing your bedding, there's no need for softeners and dryer sheets. Keep it simple. The steps we described above of our secret method is the tried and tested way to keep your sheets fresher for longer.
Mattresses really benefit from a good vacuum every now and then and it's in your best interest. You may be horrified when you see all the particles that get collected the first time you do it - skin, hair, dust and lint to name a few.
If they are not fully dried correctly, you can create a mouldy situation for yourself in your bedding, which is definitely not ideal. For best results, use an industrial machine at a laundromat or leave it to the professionals - it's just not worth the risk.
If you're feeling like your bedding needs a little boost of freshness, using some essential oils and natural scents like lavender, cedar and pine can add something special. For best sleeping results, steer clear of anything too strong or too sweet.
]]>As wonderful as that sounds, many washing detergents that you would find filling your supermarket shelves contain harsh chemicals that can be harmful and have a detrimental effect on your skin.
If you are wondering whether washing powder can cause a rash, the quick answer is yes. Read on to find out more.
We will unpack how to identify rashes, as well as some tips and preventative measures to put in place to ensure you don't suffer the side effects from selecting the wrong washing powder. If you're wondering specifically about Eczema, see our post "Can Washing Powder Cause Eczema?".
If you're unlucky enough to develop a rash as a result of your choice of washing powder, you aren't alone. Unfortunately, many people have negative experiences with the stock standard detergents you'd find in your local store.
A rash that has been brought on by a reaction to your washing powder is most likely to appear where your clothes are the tightest, where it has more direct skin contact - such as under your arms, between your legs or behind your knees.
If it is widespread, you will likely find it to be confined to the areas of your body that have been touching your clothing. In babies, one way to find out if the rash is caused by washing powder is to check under their disposable nappy. If they have a rash all over their body where their clothing has touched, but nothing present under their nappy, it's likely their skin condition is a result of your laundry detergent.
The rash may appear similar to a flare-up of eczema, in that your skin may experience redness, scaliness, cracks, itchiness, swelling or blistering. If it has come about suddenly, the first thing to ask yourself is whether you have made any detergent changes recently. If so, you have identified the probable cause.
If you are the recipient of a nasty rash or irritation from your washing powder, it has either been caused by allergens or contact dermatitis.
Many common laundry detergents contain allergens: substances that may cause allergic reactions in some people. The chemicals lurking in your washing powder are capable of triggering an allergic reaction. Usually, the main culprit is the synthetic fragrances packed in to give that daisy-fresh springtime vibe.
Other key players in the itchy game are preservatives and dyes, which are known to be responsible for reactions and sensitivities. If you already experience eczema or other existing skin conditions, you are much more susceptible to allergic reactions.
Contact Dermatitis is a type of eczema that is triggered by exposure to certain substances, like, you guessed it, washing powder. Contact Dermatitis will present itself as an itchy rash that is red in appearance and will appear after contact with an allergy trigger.
There are two types of Contact Dermatitis - allergic and irritant. Irritant Contact Dermatitis is the most common of the two and is brought about by repetitive exposure to a trigger. Over time, the irritant drains moisture and oils from your skin, leaving you with a red, itchy, scaly rash.
Allergic Contact Dermatitis may flare up, up to 72 hours post-exposure to an allergen, in what is known as delayed hypersensitivity. This presents as red, itchy rashes and possibly even swelling and blistering. It can be quite nasty, but fortunately, the allergy does settle down once the exposure has been cut off.
So what happens if you've developed this nasty rash, but you've been able to rule out your washing powder?
Here are some other known causes that may result in similar looking rashes:
There are some remedies you can try in the comfort of your own home, to lessen the effects of irritants and allergens on your skin.
Either fill a bag with ice or soak a face washed in cold water. Hold it against the affected area until the itchiness and/or pain is relieved.
The science behind this is to limit the blood flow to the inflammation site. This can work fast in reducing swelling, providing fast relief.
This one is a little old school but it's a classic for a reason. Make sure you have colloidal oats on hand (not the breakfast kind), add one cup to a bathtub filled with warm water.
Soak in this for half an hour, before rinsing off in a cool shower. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of oat oil work together to ease your rash.
Whilst coconut oil is amazing to use in the kitchen, it is also incredibly versatile. It has many uses, including working to cute rashes. Virgin coconut oil contains healing, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory qualities and you can apply it directly to your skin as a moisturiser.
As far as inexpensive, in-home options go, aloe vera can be a wonderful tool in soothing the irritation and pain experienced due to your rash.
For best use, wash and dry the affected area, before applying the aloe vera as you would moisturiser.
Moisturising the rash can be effective, in replenishing the natural oils and moisture which have been stripped by the allergens.
When in doubt, ask your local pharmacist about your over-the-counter treatment options. They will likely recommend an inexpensive (yet effective) ointment to be applied daily.
If you are unable to determine the cause of your rash, or it gets worse, be sure you contact a medical professional.
They say prevention is better than a cure, and when it comes to laundry time, there are a few ways you can prevent rashes and protect your skin.
We all know that laundry products are marketed with their floral scents which certainly has its appeal, however, beware of synthetic fragrances. If you really want to add a scent to your washing, consider some essential oils
Find a trusted brand that works for you and stick with it. It can be tempting to pick up the cheapest brand or the one that is on sale any given day, but the truth is it's just not worth it. If you have a brand you know and love, that is kind to your skin, it makes sense to be consistent.
If you're in the market for a gentle, environmentally friendly washing powder by a company that knows what it means to make only the best products from the finest ingredients then look no further.
At Hudstone, our washing powders are safe for sensitive skin conditions, and we have a carefully crafted sensitive blend that is very mild.
Many people ask us what we put into our laundry products, to make them so gentle yet effective in the fight against dirt. We have absolutely nothing to hide and can promise you that each and every Hudstone formula is safe for you, your family and the environment.
Our Hudstone Sensitive Washing Powder (Super Concentrate) contains an alkaline mineral salt, nonionic and anionic surfactant, making it the best choice washing powder for sensitive skin.
It has been lovingly created with the most sensitive of skin in mind, such as those with existing skin conditions and even babies. We leave out all fragrances and essential oils from this blend, meaning it can do its job without posing any threat to your sensitive skin.
We don't mess around with any nasty bits you would probably be sold in the supermarket chains, such as fillers, irritants and synthetic fragrances.
We put only the premium elements in, giving you a brighter wash each and every time.
We sell this powder in a quantity perfect for any lifestyle - from our 2kg pack (averaging 80 top-loader cycles and 160 front loader cycles) right up to our 10kg pack (where you can expect a yield of 400 top-loader washes and an epic 800 front loader washes).

Proudly Australian made and owned, at Hudstone, we have been operating for almost 40 years. We are a company you can trust, and we know how to care for you, your skin and the environment.
]]>If you're reading this, you or someone you love probably suffers from some kind of allergies. Stick with us, and we will help you find the best washing powder for you and your family.
Being a staple of every home, it's safe to say we would be lost without washing powder. It makes our clothes feel and smell nice, removes stains and brightens our favourite clothes. However, in recent times there has been more of a focus on just what goes into our household detergents.
There has been a lot of research into the potential risks of the commonly used chemicals in products we had been purchasing without a second thought, and the results have shown that some of the harsh ingredients could be putting you and your family at risk.
As much as we would like to think of washing powder as a humble household product that smells of daisies and makes our whites whiter and our brights brighter - but surprisingly, there could be a bunch of toxic chemicals, preservatives, artificial fragrances, dyes and even potential carcinogens lurking under the surface.
The effects these ingredients could have to your body can be quite dire, with adverse skin reactions and conditions quite common. Those with a history of skin allergies or eczema should be extra careful not to overdo it when it comes to exposure to these ingredients.
A common reaction to washing powders is the way it can trigger nasty skin conditions such as contact dermatitis, which comes about when your skin experiences exposure to a foreign substance and has a bad reaction to it.
Hot water, not warm, is what it takes to eliminate pet hair, dust mites and other allergens from your washing machine cycle.
Studies show that washing your laundry in temperatures of 60 degrees celsius and above has the ability to kill 100% of dust mites, 97% of pollen and 90% of pet hair that may be present in your clothes and bedding.
If you turn the dial down just twenty degrees, you will find that only an estimated 6.5% of dust mites will be killed, 60% of pet fur and 69% of pollen will be removed. This obviously makes a huge difference, and shows just how important it is to use a hot wash to get rid of all of the nasties.
When washing delicate items, if they can't handle the hotter water, another option for the best allergen removal results is to set it on a lower temperature and opt for at least two rinses.
When tested on bed sheets, steam cleaning has been proven to be equally as effective as a hot wash cycle, in eliminating allergens such as pet hair, pollen and dust mites. A double rinse in cold water following a regular wash at any temperature has also been shown to be effective at removing all traces of dog dander.
If you are suffering an allergic reaction but aren't sure exactly what is causing it, it can be frustrating trying to pinpoint the culprit.
When you see a strange rash appear randomly on your skin, you're probably going to look first towards the food and drink you've been consuming lately. If nothing has changed about your diet, you will probably move on to your skin care routine to assess whether you have added anything new into the mix.
If you can safely rule out any of those, then consider the location of your rash. Is it only on one side of your face? If you are a side-sleeper, it sounds as though it could be contact dermatitis from your pillow - which of course highlights a possible allergic reaction to your washing powder.
If you have ruled out all the possibilities you can think of and the root of the issue is still eluding you, it is best to seek medical advice for tests and treatment. This will put your mind and your body at ease.
It is also worth noting that whilst unlikely, it is possible to develop an allergic reaction to an existing factor in your life at any time, although it is much more common that any new additions to your world should be ruled out first.
If you have developed allergies towards laundry detergents, or tend to be allergy prone and have sensitive skin, the good news is there is a washing powder out there just for you.
Being allergic to the traditional washing powders due to their chemical ingredients is actually more common than you would think. Many brands are now releasing allergy-friendly products without the potential nasties, so you and your family can wash and wear in peace.
Finding the best washing powder for sensitivities and allergies is certainly not a
one-size-fits-all situation, however we think we have a pretty amazing contender for you to try.

]]>Nobody is ever exactly “itching” to do the laundry, and nor do you want to be. If you are someone with a sensitive skin condition, then it’s extra important to take steps not to leave yourself in an uncomfortable situation.
When looking around for a new washing powder, there are so many options. How do you know which one is going to be right for you? The search gets even trickier when you need to take sensitive skin into consideration.
Simply put, there are two main factors that should be at the top of your criteria - a detergent that is free from perfumes and artificial colours and one which has been specifically designed for sensitive skin.
The truth is there are so many products hitting your supermarket shelves that have so many ingredients added to them that don’t need to be there. They may smell pretty, but it’s important to note that all of the artificial fragrances and colours can have a detrimental effect on your body. If they aren’t adding to the quality of the wash, then why do we need them?
There are such a wide range of laundry detergent manufacturers out there claiming to be made with sensitive skin in mind. It’s one thing to talk the talk, but can they walk the walk?
There are companies out there releasing low-irritant versions of their products. Usually, they have simply substituted or omitted the common suspects such as colours and scents.
Whilst this is a positive move for our itch-prone friends, and removing these ingredients typically will not have any impact on the quality of your spin cycle, there are usually a host of other annoying potential skin irritants lurking in the background that sneak into the bottle.
Some ingredients that could bring on a nightmare for the sensitive skinned folk among us are simply seen as non-negotiables for most manufacturers, as achieving the same results without them is put in the “too hard basket” and they make the final cut after all.
If you experience sensitive skin but long for an easy, breezy laundry experience, then let’s explore the nasties to avoid when searching for the best washing powder.
When it comes to the speedy removal of stains, the biological catalysts known as enzymes do the job nicely. They can target specific types of stains effectively, such as blood, protein, grass or starch. Whilst they do a great job, they can put the sensitive skin sufferers in an uncomfortable position, so they are definitely best to avoid if you are prone to skin irritation.
Fluorescers are fascinating chemicals which absorb UV light and turn it into blue light. When optical brighteners are added to your laundry cycle, they make your clothing appear much brighter and whiter. Fun fact though - they don’t actually aid in the dirt removal process. They are probably best to avoid if you have sensitive skin.
Everyone's skin is different. This means it may take some trial and error to find a detergent that works for you.
Whether it’s protection for a little one’s sensitive skin or your own, it’s incredibly important to keep sensitive skin in mind when you’re doing the laundry. If your skin is prone to skin irritation and allergies, then the last thing you want is to irritate it further by using a heavily fragranced laundry detergent or placing rough clothes against it. Don’t worry though, just a few simple changes to your laundry routine can make a big difference to your skin - and your comfort level!
Finding a detergent you like that also works for your sensitive skin is just one part of the story. It's important to rinse your clothes thoroughly, in order to remove every little trace of detergent - as any residue can have an irritating effect on your skin. If your washing machine has a programmable option for a second spin cycle, then it may be a good idea to take advantage of it.
You may need to experiment with this one, but it's important to get the ratio of detergent per clothes right. Modern detergents are quite concentrated, so chances are you need less than you think.
For example, putting in your usual amount for a full load, simply to wash a couple of urgent things will likely lead to extra detergent residue, which you want to try and avoid.
Washing machines with a high rinse score are a great idea if you're in the market for a new one. The higher the rinse score, the more detergent they remove from each wash.
As excited as you may be to show off your brand new clothes, it's important to wash them first. There are a number of potential irritants that may be active on the fabric, following the production process. Eliminate the risk by taking the time to put them in the wash before you wear them. This is important for everyone, but particularly for babies.
Fabric softener conditions and smooths the fabric fibres in your clothes, which makes them softer and gentler on your skin. Eliminate any awful scratchy feeling and the possible irritation it brings with it, by using a gentle fabric softener.
It's no secret that babies have the most sensitive skin, and there are laundry products out there marketed specifically for babies. But are they necessary? The simple answer is no.
A laundry detergent that meets the sensitivity criteria correctly - that contains no colours or perfumes and created in a mild formula specifically for those with sensitive skin conditions, will be suitable for the entire family.
If you or anyone in your family develop a persistent skin condition and have tried a number of detergents, be sure to consult a medical professional who will be able to run necessary tests and provide a diagnosis and treatment.
With almost 40 years in the washing powder game, proudly owned and operated within Australia, at Hudstone, we know what it takes to create the best products for you, your family and the environment.
Each and every product in our range has been carefully and lovingly crafted with only the most essential and premium of ingredients, for a better and brighter wash every time.
Every washing powder in our range is non-toxic, biodegradable, safe to use and environmentally friendly. We are suitable for vegans and we have never and will never test on animals.
What we leave out is just as important as what we put in - unlike many products you would find stocked on the shelves of your supermarket chains, we choose not to use any nasty bits such as irritants, fillers or synthetic fragrances.
Despite being different from your run-of-the-mill commercial laundry detergents, there is absolutely no question of our wash quality. We are often asked just how our products can achieve such brilliant results without any of the typical ingredients. Our customers keep coming back for more, and you don’t have to look very far to see all of their positive feedback.

The areas on the body that may be affected vary from case to case and they tend to change with age. The most common problem areas are:
Dry skin can definitely trigger eczema flare-ups, environmental factors can play a huge part. These may include:
So, given the last item on the list...
It is typical for washing powders to be manufactured using a variety of ingredients which are potential irritants.
The dyes, preservatives, chemicals and fragrances often contained in your run of the mill washing powder has been known to cause skin irritation and rashes among children and adults. See our post on "Can Washing Powder Cause A Rash".
Sensitivities or allergies towards washing powder may arise at the point of first contact, or it may take a series of repeated exposure. However, once you have developed an adverse reaction or allergy, it will only take the slightest contact to trigger the irritation in the future.
Surfactants, which work to loosen dirt particles to allow them to wash away, will be present in most soaps and detergents. Certain types of surfactants can be quite harmful towards sensitive skin types.
Another culprit contributing to dermatological issues are artificial fragrances. Typically, washing powder companies use a proprietary blend of fragrances, not allowing for transparency of ingredients - and essentially making it impossible to know exactly what it's made of.
Along with the potential irritants already mentioned, some other hidden allergens in standard washing powder may be:
As the name suggests, contact dermatitis is a skin condition caused by coming into contact with something which causes your skin to have a reaction - i.e. plants, soaps, or textures.
Washing powder has certainly been linked to Contact Dermatitis and the itchy, red rash it brings along with it. The rash may be confined to specific areas or can be widespread.
There are two types of Contact Dermatitis - Irritant and Allergic Contact.
Irritant Contact Dermatitis is a non-allergic skin condition - in fact, it is the most common one. If you suffer from this, it means an irritating substance has caused damage to your top layer of skin and left an itchy rash.
If you have developed Irritant Contact Dermatitis and its accompanying rash, from your washing powder, it is possible that you aren't allergic to any particular ingredient in the detergent.
On the other hand, Allergic Contact Dermatitis is caused by an allergic reaction, which is your body's way of producing an immune response to exposure to a substance you are allergic to.
Most of the rashes you may contract are not cause for immediate concern, and in fact, they can usually be treated at home by switching up some lifestyle factors or utilising simple remedies. Here's some more ideas from Eczema Association of Australasia Inc (EAA) on how to manage symptoms.
If you have developed a sensitivity or allergy towards a chemical irritant, the first step is to identify the issue. If you know you are displaying signs of allergies to particular ingredients or brands, you will be educated on which products to avoid.
To ease your symptoms, you may find relief from:
Most rashes brought about by your choice of washing powder, can be prevented by opting for a laundry detergent which is free from artificial dyes and fragrances.
This is due to the chemicals and artificial fragrances, which many people have sensitivities to. By using an alternative which is natural, your skin will certainly thank you.
By adding a second rinse cycle to your wash, you can eliminate any residue from the detergent from staying on your clothes. Using the hottest water temperature is also a great tip to note, as it kills any potential allergens.
When you purchase new clothes. Always give them a wash before you wear them. Many manufacturers use finishing sprays and other chemicals that can have a detrimental effect on your skin’s wellbeing.
Using an alternative to fabric softener (which is essentially just extra chemicals), such as dryer balls, can soften your clothes without adding any irritants.
These two ingredients make the perfect natural cleaning solution and can be added during the wash cycle to soften and brighten your clothes.
It's important to show your machine some love, particularly if you have one member of the family with sensitivities and you are still using standard detergents for the rest of the family.
A hot water cycle with some vinegar and baking soda thrown in for good measure, can alleviate any chemical buildup or soap scum from your washing machine.
Avoid potentially nasty chemical-based stain removers and replace it with a simple solution of baking soda, washing soda and water. Mix well and apply to the stain by scrubbing with a toothbrush.
